A bearing is a machine element thatconstrains relative motion to only thedesired motion, and reduces frictionbetween moving parts. The design ofthe bearing may, for example, providefor free linear movement of themoving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, itmay prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normalforces that bear on the moving parts. Most bearingsfacilitate the desired motion by minimizing friction. Bearings are classified broadly according to the type ofoperation, the motions allowed, or to the directions of theloads (forces) applied to the parts.
